This was largely completely ridiculous...like cliff notes to the world of this trilogy if you were totally unable to get it.

What an amazing reference guide for the All Souls Trilogy, although I wouldn't expect anything less from Ms. Harkness. Not necessarily a book to sit down and read cover to cover, but a great resource to look up additional information about characters, settings, items, magic, history, etc.

A fun companion to the trilogy. In a way more complete than the book itself. You can tell the author, a historian , had fun placing the characters in real historical situations and filling in the unknowns with her imagination.

Interesting insight on the real and imagined histories within the series.

This is a great refresher for the All Souls World, but it is in essence an encyclopedia. I didn’t read it in order but you don’t need to as you go back and revisit the characters. It also gives solid history and science lessons for the times, places and theories that drive these books. I really enjoyed it but wouldn’t want to listen to it on audio. This is a book to flip and browse through.

3.5 stars.
For what this book is, a reference book for readers on a fictional world, it certainly meets expectations. I did not read every word, I do not need to read the detailed character descriptions for characters that I know because I read the book. I skimmed over every page, but I did really enjoy the Q&A with Deborah Harkness and the photos of the real life places that inspired the locations of The World of All Souls. If you are super interested in these characters/places for more than just a little bit of entertainment this book is probably good to flip through. Otherwise, you can ignore it, as it doesn't actually add anything to the plotlines.

So I really didn’t read all of this per say since I mostly used it as a reference guide while reading the newest story in the All Souls Universe, Time’s Convert. I do want to reread the original trilogy at some point since I absolutely love it, but I so desperately wanted to dive in to the latest book that I found this to be a happy alternative. Thank you Deborah Harkness for being the historian you are and providing all this info for OCD readers such as myself. I will actually probably return to this sooner rather than later since the TV series should be coming to the US early next year!!
