Talk about skeletons in one's closet. This one has many.

I gave this book a five star rating because it kept me completely interested. I read it in two days and if I hadn't had other things I had to do I am certain I would have finished it in one. The story line was refreshing and different. I would recommend this book as a great vacation read when one has a only time to waste. Once I began reading it was hard to put it down and I was excited to finish it.

I had a hard time with this book, the back and forth from the past to the present. I'm not really a fan of those types of books. It was a somewhat interesting story, but I didn't really connect with any of the characters.

This is my first time reading Mary Burton's alter persona, Mary Ellen Taylor. This "softer" side of Mary is nice. A very good change from the thrillers. Although, my favorite will be the thrillers. I enjoyed this book a lot that I will have to check out other books from this persona.

The duo storylines were good. Yet, I was more partial to the past time period of 1988 and Claire. Instantly, the emotional connection that I formed with Claire was strong. Whereas; with Lucy, it took a bit longer for me to warm up to her. However, as the story progressed and I learned her story, I did feel for her. The more I read; the more invested I became in the story as well as the characters. Thus, making this an easy and quick read. Mary Ellen Taylor pens a heart warming story that will touch readers in the heart with Winter Cottage!

So I’m not sure this book warrants this low of a rating because of my one issue (because clearly other people didn’t care about this as much because this book has a 4+ rating AND my book club was able to move past this but I just could not) but anyway -

MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD

“distant” cousins??? Having the same great grandmother is NOT that distant. Like ughhh HOW YUCKY. I could not get over that at all. And Lucy and Hank brushed it off like it was nothing! Huge ick for me, and I only finished this book because it was for my book club or I would have DNF’d it.

All that said, I thought the story was well written apart from that one thing. I usually don’t like shifting timelines but I thought it was beautifully done here. There were a lot of characters so it did get confusing here and there but because I read this book all in one weekend, it didn’t get too bad. Would not recommend reading this too slowly.

Probably would have given it 4 or 5 stars if only Lucy had been Claire and Jimmy’s descendant and not Victoria and Jimmy’s (Hank was Victoria’s descendant too but with a different man).

Emotional but in a good way

This book made my heart so happy! I never write reviews and felt the need to leave one here. This book has suspense and some bad ass women that you can’t help but love. It’s like Downton Abbey meets Southern Charm. I LOVE IT! Starting the second one right now!

What a great surprise this book was! I think that's one of the reasons I'm giving it 5 stars. It was free through Prime and sounded good. It was a quick read, full of surprises and a bit of drama. I liked the 3 storylines. A bit tough to follow at the beginning and I was often referring to the family tree at the front of the book but I love how everything came together. Great writing also! Not a lot of random fluff, which I can't stand! I would definitely read more by this author.

Update: WHAT?!?! There is a companion book/sequel?!?! Spring House! Cool!!!! Can't wait to read this too!
