So far, this is my favorite junji ito's book. Before I've read some colections of short stories, and wanted to see how his caracters would evolve after continuous weird events and Uzumaki gave me that. It's not the terror I was expecting, It was giving more and more bad vibes as closer to the end (which I like better).
Don't know If I agree with the comparision made at the end, at the final comment, about capitalism, but even If that metafor goes through, its a good book.

Spoiler for the review: This review essentially boils down to me complaining about ito being ito.

There is no doubt that ito is an incredible artist and anyone saying differently is either being willfully ignorant or flat out hateful. But, this stories biggest problem is that the characters are objectively poorly written and just don’t matter. I understand that that is common amongst ito’s work but, it doesn’t excuse it and leads this story to being more equivalent to an art book rather than a functional narrative.

This doesn’t mean that ito’s work isn’t enjoyable and I still plan on reading Gyo and Tomie but, for me, it’s a problem if all the fantastic art was stripped of context but, still has the same emotional impact as if you read through all of Uzumaki.

It kind of felt like the person just had a bunch of really cool spiral drawings and then wrote a very skeletal story to hold the drawings together. It was a very weird story with very weird art.

It’s not that scary for me. But it’s definitely creepy and horrifying at some point. AND THOSE DAMN SNAIL PEOPLE!!! I HATE IT SO MUCH. lowkey crying at the ending, but at the same time it’s beautiful

Again, I hate the snail people

gave it 5 stars cause why not?? i love Kirie and Shuichi so much. THIS IS A MASTERPIECE

I don’t usually read manga/comics. Maybe I’ll read more of them after this. Also there’s gonna be an anime adaption of this soon, can’t wait

Widely praised as the classic horror manga that it is. And what they say is true! The artwork is wonderful, the story creative and really unsettling.

It is of a particular brilliance to choose spirals as a topic for horror, as so many things in our world are shaped like spirals and people, including myself, have a tendency to appreciate looking at spirals. What is particularly horrific is that most of the spiral-related incidents start or stem from everyday objects or phenomena. All in all it is kind of relatable which makes it more unsettling.

I heard some people comment negatively on the fact that the protagonists would not leave this town even though the unstoppable and dangerous nature of the town was kind of in their face for a long time. I can see where that comment comes from. I'm not particularly bothered though. Eloping is not an easy thing to do and in the beginning most adults would not believe any supernatural explanation. Later on it is becoming increasingly difficult to run away from this town.

If you like horror as a genre, I think this manga is a must read. Enjoy!
