For someone who has spent time on the "couch", in stints of leadership mentoring, spiritual direction, and even a try at psychotherapy, this book is an extremely helpful look from the vantage point of the chair. Combining loads of deep insights from an experienced therapist and a glimpse in to the world of psychotherapeutic-language, this book was very helpful and eye-opening. I love the short chapters and snippets of insight for all sorts of issues, problems, and joys experienced while participating in the work of those who have "ministered to human despair."

Amazing work of art. I absolutely believe that every therapist ever needs to read this and will be better for it.

There's a reason this is a classic that is recommended every time a new therapist asks for reading suggestions. Yalom is a gifted writer with decades of therapy experience and a talent for writing about therapy. Many of his insights were useful to me as an early career therapist. I definitely approach therapy differently than Yalom, yet I felt many of his ideas could be applied in any treatment modality.

Some years back a psychiatrist who was making a presentation to a group of us lawyers mentioned Yalom and recommended his books as informative about the human condition. Because the rest of that presentation was so powerful for me, I added Yalom's books to my wishlist and gradually acquired a few that sat waiting to be read.

Fast forward to now, when I am nearing the end of my transition journey from lawyer to counselor/therapist. On the first day at my practicum site placement, my supervisor cited to this book several times as informing her approach to counseling. That night I pulled it from the shelf and began to read. And underline.

This short book contains 85 chapters. Some are stand alone ideas; many are step-by-step discussions of tools and concepts to use in therapy. Many ring true in my personal life and many I can already foresee using in my future professional life. I will revisit this book many times. I have already recommended it to my own therapist, among others, and will continue to do so.
