I really wanted to love this book. As a therapist moving into an outpatient setting I was looking for something to help me along that journey. While I found some very helpful nuggets of information, I also found many aspects of this book to be lacking the professional decorum that I want to have as a therapist. While I agree we should work to build connections with clients, I can’t think of a situation where I would tell a client if I saw her in another setting and I was not her therapist that I would think she is attractive and approach her to get to know her better. The writing comes across as fairly arrogant as well. Overall I don’t think this is a book I’m keeping around but I’ll pocket the aspects of it that can be helpful for me.
Every now and again I need a little tune-up/deep dive into my alter ego who is a fulfilled and effective psychotherapist. This is my calling! Yalom is so comfortable in his skin, lending his years of experience and thinking outside of the paradigm of the field to guide budding therapists. If only I had this when I was young!
Idk I don’t really read it but that semester is over so I guess that counts
