Love his insistence on the benefits of exploring the here-and-now in therapy (context vs content) and the central importantance of the therapeutic relationship.

This book is a gift to young therapists and has gotten me through more than a few crises of confidence as I learn to do this work

Amazing book

3.5*

As an incoming graduate student for a Clinical Mental Health Counseling program, this was a great first book to read for my program. It was practical, an easy read in the way that it was broken up into brief chapters, and ultimately, I felt encouraged and affirmed in my pursuit of the profession. I recommend this book for clients, if they so wish, but mainly for anyone considering the profession or starting to embark on that journey.

It was definitely a must-read for future therapists just because it exposes you to a great deal of scenarios that one could encounter as a therapist. I wish he had left out the dream analysis sections, simply because I did I didn’t feel like they fit in this book. It’s just such a particular skill that not all therapists use when the rest of the book felt relatively universal to all counseling theories. Overall, I enjoyed reading it and I very much would recommend it to people for the content.
