For a short read, this book hits a lot of interesting topics. Love the setting -- the Sundarbans off the coast of India, next to a tiger preserve. I found Neel to be quite a sympathetic character -- deeply attached to his family, thoughtful about opportunities he has that his sister and father did not, very concerned about his home and the trees and animals that reside there. There's some intense adventure, quick moving plot, good resolution, and I really like the book's layout -- both the chapter decorations and the illustrations. Altogether, really well done.

Nearly five stars. This was a quick and easy story about growing up; good character development; lots of info about the islands around Indonesia based on fact.

A tightly paced and concise story that has at its center a baby tiger who has escaped from a reserve. I didn't know about the Sundarbans before reading this story and it is a beautiful introduction to the area. The 'tiger boy' of the title is a young boy who has the chance to win a scholarship to study outside of his village, a prestigious scholarship and an opportunity for him to shine. He doesn't want to leave his family and the village though. He's distracted from study by wanting to find the tiger cub before a rich man newly arrived on the islands gets his hands on it to sell it on the black market. The rich man is able to pay people to hunt it down, and while yes, it has a happy end, it's not always clear how the ending will go and there is definite tension on the chase.
