3.5 stars.
How things have changed since David Attenborough's expeditions to Guyana, Indonesia and Paraguay. And rightly so.
This is a fascinating look at how zoos used to collect their animals, the characters Attenborough and his companions met along the way and the adventures they shared.

4.5/5 because he kept introducing new words that were biological or botanical or the name of an item in a local language without explanation. It took about half of the book before I realised a thing he'd been carrying for weeks was a knife - and that was a rare win.

Otherwise, gorgeous prose and buckets of lovely enthusiasm.

"The republication of these accounts makes a worthy addition to the great naturalist expeditions of the past such as Wallace’s journeys to South America and Southeast Asia. This book may not match the descriptive charm of Wallace, the humour of Durrell, or even the evocative lyricism of Attenborough’s own later work, but there is still much to love here. In these early works, we see a young naturalist in the making, and join him on the journey that helped create one of the most respected and admired nature writers and broadcasters of the modern age."
