I was obsessed with this story as a middle schooler
This book is fine. We follow America as she struggles between her first love and her newfound interest in a man that could help her to grow to be more than an incredibly naive young woman. The writing is fine. The characters are a little single-note. Some of the story beats are predictable, due to this. All of this is fine. I've read and enjoyed books with similar levels of writing. My issue is with the ending.
Spoiler
The premise of this book (based on the text on the cover, "35 Girls. 1 Crown") is that we find out who wins the competition between the aforementioned 35 ladies. We don't. We only find out who the final six are after a sudden and rushed elimination of 16 ladies in the last few chapters. Why on earth did the author decide that this story needed to be split into (at least) two books? There is no twist at the end that suggests a whole second book is needed to resolve it. We've been bumbling along with no real deep, lasting conflict up until this point--why would I pick up a second book just to continue this pace? Nothing in the ending of this novel (if you could call it an ending) calls me to read the next part in the series.
