Worldbuilding is too confusing - I just felt I was reading a bunch of jargon and didn't understand the world I had landed into.

http://nwhyte.livejournal.com/2359492.html[return][return]I got this after tremendously enjoying Zoo City when it was nominated for the BSFA Award a few years ago. I'm afraid this left me rather colder; on the whole I enjoy urban fantasy (which Zoo City is) and I don't much enjoy cyberpunk (which Moxyland is), so I guess it's the specifics of the subgenre. There's deft interweaving of four different narrative strands with on-line gaming and the digital divide, all set in the near future of 2018; people with more of an affinity for Neuromancer than I have will enjoy this more than I did.

Awesome dystopian cyberpunk from such a talented writer.

Úgyhogy most megyek és visszateszem a SIM-kártyámat a Galaxymból a Nokia 5110-be.

A hugely promising debut novel. Moxyland does futuristic dystopianism well, rough-sketching a nearly-future that's not too ridiculous an imagining from our current increasing dependence on technology.

The characters are for the most part not particularly likeable, but then why should they be? What they are is intriguing, as are the world and the ideas envisioned and described so pithily by Beukes. The writing style is sharp and slick, I can almost picture a fast-shot movie to accompany it.

It's not a perfect execution - I felt like some of the ideas were left just a little too under the surface and some were a little too bluntly drawn - but that's nitpicking a touch; the kernel of this book is extremely strong. There's a sense here of an author who will explore her ideas and themes to ever-greater effect in future novels. I'll definitely be reading more!

Had to get used to the slang etc, but the book became more and more addictive the further I read on. Great read! Thank you Tze-Wen, for giving this book away :D Lucky me!

This was pretty awesome. Set in futuristic South Africa, it follows the lives of 4 people.

Kendra - art school dropout who signs up for prototype nano treatment 1) cures you of everything and rapidly heals you 2) makes you crave whatever the company wants (for instance, a type of soda) 3) ? has weird side effects that make you follow the nano-dogs?

Toby - vlogger/asshole, he'll do anything to get top footage

Lerato - techy/genius corporate ladder climber, she hacks stuff for Toby/Tendeka

Tendeka - protester, easily influenced and lets himself be persuaded to become a terrorist (that was easy.. and gives new insight to how other religious terrorists can pop up)

Plot:

I don't like Toby's personality but I like his character plot. At the end, he's healing up and thinks (I'm thirsty) so omg was he also somehow given nanos!? Or did they always control Toby!?
