Reading this book, I felt I had stumbled sideways into someone’s personal diaries. The writing is as beautiful as it is painful, and full of life and death. I learned a lot about fires, both productive and destructive. I would prefer to learn from an Indigenous author, but she did a good job of recognizing the limits of her experience and taking us through her own journey of learning. There wasn’t much on the causes of climate change, which is a potentially dangerous oversight.

So very California.

This is not about fire; at least not really. The author uses the fire theme to talk about the pain of existing and a whole lot about herself and how she’s suffering, but privileged, but still suffering. Which is ok, since it’s a memoir, but definitely not what I’m looking for. Writing style oscillates between beautiful almost-poetry and mind-numbingly boring.

I’m not sure if this would’ve been picked up if the author was not in publishing herself. Also, if I understood it correctly, it’s read by the author. Let’s just say there’s a reason that audiobook narrator is an actual job.
