It was very different from what I had imagined, reading the book with no prior knowledge about Nakajima’s writing. It was very existentialist, and a lot of the stories in one way or other focused on the Way of Taoism. Prior surface knowledge of the Chinese dynasties and The Journey To The West greatly helped when reading the stories.

There’s a clear, very strong inspiration from classical Chinese fable structure and I thought it was very well-done. “Forebodings” was my favorite– the others run into the problem that is very typical of the inspiration source, where there’s a lot of political info I’m just not that interested in.

beautiful book! i loved every story very much, they were written and translated eloquently. each story had its own unique characteristics and i found them to all be quite philosophical, i loved the rebirth of wujing. after reading this, i immediately found myself wanting more of atsushi nakajima's stories, but sadly this is the only english translation i could find.

A book of historical Chinese stories written by a Japanese author. Some of these I really enjoyed and some kind of meandered. I was glad I’d read an abridged Journey to the West and had that context.
