the story didn't have a clear tension arc though. there were 4 separate points where it felt like the story was finally kicked off but then the tension just dropped and fell flat and there was no progression for a long time.
it felt like there were a lot of individual good puzzle pieces but there was simply something missing which means they didn't connect into one nice solid picture and that is truly a pity.
i wish I could give this book a better rating, but i wouldn't recommend it to most people i know so I can't.

I enjoyed having a neuro-atypical protagonist & LGBTQ+ characters. Aster is a delightful character who spends most of her time thinking in very literal and straight-forward ways. Her strong understanding of medical science isn't her only useful skill, and her way of thinking helps her crack tough codes and to survive.
Content warnings for suicide, rape, spousal abuse, oppressive abuse, racism, mental illness, loss of a parent, and other topics that may be difficult for some readers.

Raven perched on the top of the fireplace and began to speak: "If you kill me and cook me up, I will be tough and stringy, breaking your teeth. You must have me alive, uncooked."So the man sprinkled salt, rosemary, lemon pepper, and cayenne onto the Raven and swallowed him up whole in one gulp. Once inside the stomach, Raven began flying about the man's body, pecking away, chewing up important parts, until the man died in great agony.Raven flew up the canal of the man's throat and escaped by way of the mouth. He fixed himself a bowl of stew. He thought about how it was good to be back home. The End.
