This book did too much telling and not enough showing for me. The conflict between Tobias and Tris was forced, unnecessary or predictable, with Tris (who is supposed to be smart!) obnoxiously repeating many of the same mistakes and being surprised when the outcome is, predictably, Not Nice. The author tried to explore the consequences of book 1 - admirable - but I wish she’d show us, somehow, and not rub it in through Tris’ inconsistent internal monologue without exploring the deeper layers. That said, the plot and pacing were great, and the ending worked up to a good climax that still makes me pick up book 3.

I had the feeling I wouldn't like the second book as much as the first one because the most fun part (the training) was completed. And I was right. But I still liked the plot a lot. It didn't drag at all, so much was happening. Sometimes maybe a little too much, too fast. But I really liked how you discovered the different fractions in ... different ways. I especially loved the more sciency, logical part and Tris' curiosity. Liked the twists, the predictable and the surprising ones. And the ending really made me curious for the third book. But I was soooooo disappointed in Tris and Four and too annoyed too often. At least Tris' development was undestandable for the most part. But Four was so different from book 1. He felt like a totally different character. And this really had a huge impact on my overall enjoyment of the book.
