This was not necessarily a bad book, but was ultimately a forgettable book. Like, I read it a week ago and now can't remember the ending. I do remember that I basically enjoyed the book but.... Meh.

This series was wonderfully different. As a sequel, it followed through with the plot set up in the first book, In The After. Demitria Lunetta is a creative thinker, an awesome writer, and unique. She's taken a post-apocalyptic genre and gave it a new level to strive for. Definitely would recommend.

My only issues with the book is the main character, who is frustratingly stubborn. With reason of course, since the world had ended, and she was hardly a teenager. Yet, despite her maturity, she's quite immature in the situations she was thrust in. When she's made to keep quiet when she can speak, or when she needs to sit still when she can walk, she's stubborn to poke her nose in places where it doesn't belong, but it got the plot going. Other than that, the book was great!

This review is difficult, because Demitria Lunetta is a very talented writer. I enjoyed this terrifying ride very much. The following will have minor spoilers that could give away material from book one and book two, please do not read further unless you are okay with some spoilers.

But I was disappointed by the lack of growth on Amy's behalf. In the first installation, I was okay with Amy's reckless behavior and justified it by her lack of knowledge and limited experience outside of her isolated and sheltered home with Baby. However, Amy has been out in the real, terrifying world for a while now. She was been trained by professionals ways to assess situational danger. She has also been warned and cautioned repeatedly to be patient throughout the series. Amy is reckless and emotional for the majority of this book. I almost felt like I was rereading her mistakes from the past book. New place, same behavior. It is like she doesn't learn and only acts on fear and adrenaline. She doesn't listen to anyone and always thinks she knows what is best in every situation. Which is not the case. Most of the book's drama would never have happened without her impulsive behavior, so I guess it was needed as a filler. Her total disregard for others is almost appalling. She will stop at nothing to prevent Baby from being tortured and studied, however, doesn't bat an eye when she gives the scientist another young subject. It seemed everyone but Baby was expendable. Then you throw in the weird love-triangle aspect and I was even more confused. Amy never allowed anyone close, so how can she truly feel anything for anyone? This seemed just tossed into the book to give Amy a more human feel. Unfortunately, because of her behavior I never felt connected to her. The ending felt rushed and thrown together. I wish there was more, because this book had so much potential. It has such a unique plot. Overall, I my dislike of the main character ended up ruining this book for me. In book one, I justified the lack of character development to the importance of survival. In this book I cannot. Too much time has passed. Amy had training and situations she should have learned from.

I did not realize how much I missed Amy and Baby until I read this book. Amy has really grown since the prior novel. She can hold her own and can and will kick some butt. The introduction to the new characters were alright. Except for Jacks and Brenna I was not feeling most of them. This is because most of the rest of them were evil like Dr. Reynolds or close too it. I don't know what is scarier...Dr. Reynolds or the floraes. My two down falls in this book was that I wanted more action. It seemed like there was a lot of dialect and not enough action. Amy stayed in one place or another for a long time. Unlike in the prior novel, In The After, where Amy was moving around a lot to escape the floraes. My other sad thing about this book was Baby. I hated what Dr. Reynolds did to her and made her become. I loved her innocence in the first book. In this one she lost it. However, this book and series ended on a good, high note. I can't wait to read the next book by this author.

Despite the abrupt ending (I'm assuming an epilogue was out of the question?), I liked the sequel. I could have done without the love triangle as it served no purpose. Amy makes it Fort Black. Fort Black is a dangerous place. Especially for women. The people there are (barely) surviving. Anything goes. They are just protected from the Floraes. Not each other. She meets Jacks (cute tattoo artist) his uncle the warden of Fort Black and, his father. Doc. She is desperate to find fellow guardian Kay's brother Ken. Dr. Reynold has her sister Baby and the clock is ticking. Ken is the only one that can help her. Maybe that explains the rushed feeling of the last part? I wouldn't avoid this book. There is an introduction of a new, likable character (Brenna). Any questions you have are answered. But... I didn't think it was as good as the first. .

2.5 stars.

I had some struggles trying to give this book a rating. Overall, I was a bit disappointed with this sequel. I just felt that this book was rushed and was left wanting more. I wanted to see what the people in New Hope reacted to the news they were given. I wanted to see the cure come into effect. I wanted to see them building the new world once the cure to the Florae outbreak comes into effect.

Also I felt Amy's relationship with Jacks came out of nowhere and also felt rushed. I liked her with Rice more in the first book.

What you're in for: A different take on zombies that were mistaken for aliens in the first book. A kick-ass heroin who is compassionate, brave, and strong. Two dystopian societies that may or may not be connected. Lots of action and craziness. Light romance. A love triangle - but barely. Good guys and bad guys. A sisterly bond. Diversity. A captivating storyline.

The romance: There really isn't much focus on romance in this book or the first. There is a bit of a love triangle, though it's just mainly two guys from two different places that Amy meets and has feelings for. In the first book, she is in New Hope, so she likes Rice. In this book, she moves on to a new place and starts to like Jacks. I, personally preferred Jacks - I thought the relationship was more believable and just liked him better as a person. Rice was too...I don't know...connected to the corruptness or something. He lied to her in In the After and he just never really gained my trust. Jacks, however, had my trust from the beginning. The romance in this book is extremely light. I don't think you'll be getting any feels or swooning from it.

The Ending: Felt a bit rushed toward the end and all of a sudden there were only 20 pages left and I truly didn't know how they were going to wrap it all up! The very end seemed abrupt to me. I wish there would have at least been an Epilogue or something.

Should you read it? I think so. Especially if you liked the first one - I would say In the End is on par with In the After. Both books captivated me with the story. Amy is a very relatable and likeable character. She is a great heroin/narrator. I enjoyed my journey through Amy's struggles and accomplishments.

A promising start to a series if rather lackluster ending. In the end the main appeal of the series is having Amy survive on her own, once the remnants of the human race are thrown back into the mix it seems to become a competition of which baddie is the baddest?

I'm not sure if the series would have benefited from a third book, but the last fifth of the book after Amy's return to New Eden is rather rushed.
