This one was more lighthearted than other Higashino's books I've read. Which was nice after the hauntingly dark Journey Under the Midnight Sun.

I loved the quiet, deliberate pacing of this mystery and how the novel was divided into sections that focused on each part of Detective Kaga's investigation into the death of a newly divorced woman found murdered in her new apartment in the Nihonbashi area of Tokyo. Her quietly lived life and seemingly unremarkable past offer few clues into who might have murdered her and why. Like the murder victim, Detective Kaga is also a newcomer to the Nihonbashi area, which adds an interesting element to the story, and gives him a different perspective on the case. The reader may be mystified by Kaga's methods but will be equally impressed by how how he pulls the threads of the story together to uncover what really happened. Secrets abound and it's unclear how each one fits into the bigger picture until Kaga reveals all. While I found some of the dialog to be a little stilted, the translation was excellent overall and transported me to the streets of Tokyo. I found this to be outstanding from start to finish and cannot wait to read more books in this series as they are translated into English and become available.

I selected this as my pick for the 2020 POPSUGAR Reading Challenge advanced prompt "a book set in Japan, host of the 2020 Olympics" and the 2020 Modern Mrs. Darcy Reading Challenge prompt "a book in translation."
