Took a while to get adjusted to the story coming from a 5 year olds perspective but I was thankful it was because I don’t think I could have read this book if it had been from the mom’s. It was not an easy read, emotional and heavy but I had to know how it ended and I knew there was some hope for the ending. There were some details that felt pointless and sometimes I didn’t fully believe the narrator was a 5 year old child, but overall a thought provoking story that will stay with me for a while. It is scary to think this book is loosely based on a true story.

i really loved this.

I don’t think I would have enjoyed this as much if it were told from ma’s perspective. seeing everything through jack’s eyes was an excellent choice of donoghue’s.

such an amazing story. heartbreaking, terrifying, hopeful… its definitely something i’ll read again if I can find some tissues. it temporarily got me out of a reading slump too, so I love it for that as well.

I liked the movie too, although some of the story changes they made bugged me - but brie larson & jacob tremblay were incredible! I will always prefer the book but I really enjoyed their performances

This was definitely one of the most depressing books I've read in quite a while, but I had to give it five stars because the premise and the way the story was told were both very intriguing. The story is told from the perspective of a five-year-old boy, which I felt added a lot of depth to the story - I was very impressed by Donoghue's ability to get inside this character's head and relate to him so strongly. This book nearly made me cry several times due to the pure emotionality with which Donoghue tells Jack and Ma's story. I found Jack's perceptions of the world around him to be very interesting, and thought a lot about all the tiny experiences and social conventions that I and those around me take for granted, and what navigating society for the first time at that age must be like. This was a very emotional and impactful book, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes true crime or stories about strong children.
