This book terrified me as a kid. I decided to read it as an adult because I discovered that it wasn’t a “found diary”, but rather a hoax - and there’s a documentary about it that I want to read. So, back to the source material!

I’m not sure if  the knowledge that an adult wrote this book has tainted my view…but WOW is it terrible. It’s scaremongering effort feels so transparent that it’s almost laughable. The character goes from innocent virgin schoolgirl to homeless drug addled prostitute in a mere 40 pages, and reads very much like “teenager written through the eyes of an adult who’s forgotten what it’s like to be an actual teenager”. The velocity with which she oscillates between Puritanism and heroin-fiend is jarring and unbelievable, clearly written by someone with no experience of drugs or addiction. And that ending? <insert “Get out” Cary Grant gif here>

Oof. This has such strong "hello fellow kids" D.A.R.E. boomer energy.  Disingenuous, leaden fear mongering. Despite it being ostensibly a sad story, I felt very little. The protagonist has the emotional authenticity of a dollar store greeting card and the story has the pacing of the Porta Potty line on day three of a chili cook-off.

I found the trajectory of her supposed decline into addiction so badly strained my credulity that I could use a nice big pile of dope to ease my pain. Maybe those dopers who are apparently going around popping blunts into people's purses will visit me! Oy.

As an added bonus, it managed to be preachy AND transphobic AND homophobic! Yuck.

Just say no. To this book.

Total target book (iykyk). Main character doesn't grow, the last 20 pages dragged on and had no plot relevance (
should have ended the book after she left the mental asylum
), tons of potential but fell so hard. It was a quick read that i read in probably 3 hours. The middle was hella interesting and my favorite part. None of the characters were remarkable and the main character was so annoying. Also that epilog pissed me off so badly and was lazy horrible writting.
either commit to the idea of your character having a happy ending or a tragic one, you can't have both?????!!!!
It suck cause the first part was so good and the way the character started her drug abuse was so well crafted but the overall book overshadowed that for me.....

I have so many mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, I loved it. It pulled me in and I couldn’t wait to see what would happen next, and whether she would get her life together. And it was great until the Epilogue. However, I also hated it…some parts were clearly not written by a young girl in her teens, and it took away from the authenticity of the diary. I also didn’t like the way the epilogue ended the book. If left too many questions but not in a cliffhanger type of way, but in a confusing what the heck just happened type of way.
