It's Mormon propaganda. The portraying of the characters and situations are borderline funny if you've actually experience or awareness of real life addiction and homelessness. Homophobic, fatphobic and all the fun things we can expect from a 70s propaganda book.

With this in mind, you can read it as a piece of fiction from its time and it's bearable. Finished in a couple days and cracked up at the ending. I'd call it camp-ish.

This book is wild af. After I learned that it was written as a cautionary religious tale, it made so much more sense because like. I just don't think that a few decades ago, in any random high school, students could just get truly a Target-run grocery list of drugs. Very prodigal son vibes going on. I give the author a bit of credit because she got me to keep reading, but my goodness. I won't be reading her again, but I will be reading the newish book about all of her lies and fables. I see why this was so popular when it came out though - it's literally sex, drugs, and rock and roll. And it was QUITE a maneuver to slip by critics with an anonymous pen name.

This story seems a bit outdated, and it is very clear that the protagonist is white with the way she is able to keep finding ways to survive and get home. Some of it seems to glorify drug use as well.

It took me soooo long to get through this book because I just kept cringing. Every single heavy-handed remark made me close the book. How on earth did people think this was anything other than a Christian trying to convince people that sex, drugs, and gay people are the worst things to ever happen to humanity? The only reason I gave it an extra star is that occasionally, when viewed strictly as fiction, it kept my attention in short bursts.

I like this book as a snapshot of life in the 1970s. A lot of the text brought me back to the pain of being a teenager. However, a lot of the plot isn't very plausible. There's also a lot of homophobia thrown in for no reason. I waited until after I finished the book to look up anything about its publication, and found out the real author's identity. That was very illuminating.
