I’ve read it before. So long ago I forgot a lot of what happens. I remember the gist but it still caught me off guard a lot. It really made me cry. I hurt when they hurt. I felt like I was back experiencing my similar experiences. The good the bad and the ugly. I love the ending, but I wish there was more of a resolution that I didn’t have to wonder about. The storyline set up with different chapters being from different one of the sisters’ internal dialogue made it impossible to put down. It didn’t follow a specific pattern so you never knew who was going to get the baton next but it would land on a cliffhanger and pick up at the same point of time just told from a different perspective. I liked how the story was ongoing. It didn’t back track in time chronologically because it switched perspectives. It followed throughout and connected in unexpected ways. It was phenomenal. I’m surprised I forgot how good it was.
Moderate: Toxic friendship
Minor: Vomit
Someone in another review said it best. Each character's personality was unique, but their voices were so similar that it was hard to tell them apart. It felt like most of the book was a summary of what was happening rather than what was happening. The characters would give an overview of what happened most of the day. I didn't get attached to any of their storylines, and the ending was kind of random.
I give this more like a 3.89. I thought it was a wonderful and easy read. It helped bring some warmth into this cold December.
I just thought a lot of it was so cheesy. Calla was so annoying with her pining after Duncan and reading into every single thing he said/did. But she never had the courage to tell him. I was glad when Brynn did it so she could finally fucking move on.
I loved Violet the most. She was cool, detached and thrilling. Her and James gave me rushes of excitement. However, I thought the ending was so ridiculous. Violet gave up her virginity to him but they didn't even make a big deal out of Violet leaving. Just that they would never forget it. Like they were both being pretty cavalier about it. Maybe it wasn't as much of a big deal as I would think it is.
Daisy was really cool too. I liked how she became more independent throughout the novel and did her own thing trying to separate herself from the shadows of her sisters.
Overall it was a good book but it wasn't something that stabbed me, changed my life, you know?

A lot of this fell flat for me and most of the side characters are one dimensional.
I love Terra McVoy. But I really didn't love this book. The voices drove me nuts as did the adjectives and everything else. I think the jacket copy framed the story badly making it romance-y and centering Calla when Daisy is clearly the heart of the story. I know it is an older book and attitudes have changed but I hated seeing retarded being used so much as a pejorative. I had a hard time buying into the sister dynamics possibly because I'm an only child and, honestly, my main takeaway from this book was an abiding relief and gratitude that I was never subjected to sleepaway camp.
A good comp to Jenny Han and Jen E smith as well as The Keys to the Golden Firebird by Maureen Johnson and the Summer Days, Summer Nights anthology.

A fair amount of chapters in and I still don’t get the purpose/plot of this book.
Too much character-study for my taste and I hate the fact that all the girls seem so boy-crazy. There’s more to life than boys, ladies.

Great summer story of three close sisters growing up and finding their way while at camp. I really enjoyed this book. Each girl was likable in their own way. Calla was too serious for her age, but you could completely connect with her and her love of Duncan, your heart breaking when hers did. Violet was not your typical middle child, but she seemed to want to stand out on her own. Her realtionship with James was just so charming and endearing. Really loved them. And poor little Daisy, just wanted to fit in and not be babied by her sisters. She truly broke my heart with her uncertainty. All in all a really great story.
