This book was so good. It was like a YA Big Little Lies. It was very suspenseful and frightening. It definitely went in directions I did not expect or guess.

True rating: 3.5.
I absolutely loved Caletti's last book, "A Heart in a Body in the World," and I was thrilled when this freebie popped up as an ALC from Libro.fm. It features another traumatized main character, this time, one who has been involved in a crime, suggested by the pieces of evidence at the beginning of each chapter. It's a slow burn to learn all the ugly, messy details.
Sydney Reilly's mother is Lila Shore, a Hollywood star grasping to stay in the spotlight. Syndey, who spends most of the year in boarding school, is spending the summer with her in a ridiculous ocean-side estate that Lila shares with her brute of a boyfriend, Jake. Lila and Jake are terrible for one another: Jake's anger and Lila's selfishness make for a volatile living situation. What's more, Jake acts like Syndey is his property, and he's blunt about his dislike of Syndey's new beau.
As the summer progresses, the pressure increases inside the lavish mansion. Sydney knows something terrible is about to happen, but she feels trapped, loyal to Lila despite her disregard for Sydney's well-being.
The audio is well done. The only issue I had with this format was that I couldn't see the evidence pieces that start each chapter. This is an excellent option for readers who enjoyed "Speak," by Laurie Halse Anderson, "The Nowhere Girls" by Amy Reed, or "Exit, Pursued by a Bear" by EK Johnston.

Disturbing and powerful. A woman’s body is her own and men should stop thinking and acting as though it was theirs.
Deb Caletti has this way of starting out with a mundane storyline and then Wham! She hits you with mystery, intrigue and drama. The main message, for me, is how women are objectified. We're too sexy, not sexy enough, placating men when they are making us uncomfortable, putting ourselves down, not voicing our concerns, etc. Powerful read...I highly recommend it.

This is such an excellent depiction of femininity & coming of age. Of beauty & the deals women make with themselves the other women & the men in their lives.
And that sinister foreshadowing that keeps on & on.

Girl, Unframed is about a girl named Sydney who has a bad feeling about going home to visit her mother in San Francisco for the summer. Her mother is a film star who has always prized her beauty and male attention above all else, including her daughter. Sydney's worries more when she finds out her mother is involved with a shady art dealer named Jake, who can't keep his eyes off Sydney.
While I understand what this book was trying to do, it just didn't do it well. The writing was so flat and characters were all so one-dimensional. There is no depth to them, people are just bad and that's all we know about them. One guy is good and that's all we know about him. The mc was so emotionless half the time oh my god. She just walks around doing things and it felt like no one was even there. The writing was so disconnected to what should have been such a strong story.
Everything about this book was just bizarre to me, from the cover to the story to the mc, to the fact that this is supposed to be a thriller. There was no tension or suspense, it was just a boring story about a girl and a bunch of creepy men doing creepy men things where they can't keep their eyes to their damn selves.
Wasn't even worth my time, I should have skipped.
