Plotwise, this is right up my alley.

⭐⭐⭐✨/5

Since I was a young girl and first read “Rip Van Winkle,” I have wanted to visit the Catskills. After reading this book, I’m not so sure anymore! In "An Unwanted Guest," Shari Lapena stays true to form by presenting readers with a compelling mystery with a twist ending. From the first few pages I was hooked, as the vignettes about each guest arriving at the hotel mirror the beginning of my favorite novel, Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None." The parallels between the two novels do not end there! While this book is not a remake of "And Then There Were None," it is definitely a homage to the mystery queen. If you enjoy a suspenseful mystery with myriad characters, you'll enjoy this.

4 stars instead of 5 only because there were clues about means but not motive throughout the book. A very clever reader could definitely notice and come to the correct conclusion about who the murderer was. However, no one could understand why the murderer was killing which was frustrating. The ending was satisfying and had a bonus twist that was good.

People looking for a weekend getaway have reservations at a remote inn. A winter storm arrives with the guests, it quickly traps them inside, and takes out the power. A perfect setting for a murder mystery. This book kept reminding me of an Agatha Christie novel. And the game Clue…it was Ms. Scarlet, in the library, with a knife.
