It was hard to feel any connection to the characters as none of them were the ones we followed through the first books, only long long descendants of those characters. That and Leto II being one of my most disliked characters made it hard to find the want to follow and see how his story will end. I'm not entirely sure why I'll still read the last two books, most likely just to say that I've finished the series.

"Tell them that the last will be first. They will know the allusion."
Woooooooowwwww. So this book took me ages to read but so have the majority of the Dune books. I don't think it's anyone's fault, it's just they're not particularly page turners because they're so dense; and sometimes you just need time to get through things. But I'm just in love with everything in this series and actually liked this one better than the third one. I'm just obsessed with the characterisations, especially Leto II and his self awareness as well as Duncan, my beautiful boy. Loved the new characters as well. I am constantly in awe of what Frank Herbert has to say about religion and culture and history, I'm just completely entranced by that. I loved how many times Leto referenced something from modern day or quoted some bible text. I am a sucker for biblical allusion because it is the penultimate story and history always repeats itself so it is interesting to see Paul's prophecy realised in Leto II as the classic tyrannical god-figure. The descriptions of his body alone were very distressing. So many interesting things in this book and in this series. I'm just loving it.
Moderate: Death, Murder, Blood, and Body horror
