I love Jon Klassen, and he didn't disappoint. However, I thought the ending of the story was very strange and could have been finished in a different way. Beautiful, but incomplete.

I had very high expectations for this book, I was so sure I was going to love it. It's just so exciting to run into brand new books of this visual quality. But the story was a bit of a let down. I can't quite explain why. I was probably hoping for something more magical or poetic and a little less mundane. My son stuck to it, but I was feeling sorry for him, as it's pretty long on words for not finally saying very much. It's still a good book though, I just wish it had been a little ... more!
The illustrations however were stunning, just like I expected. But, they may have less appeal for kids than adults.

Beautiful illustrations and lyrical text but will kids like it? I am not sure. Very moving for adults.

3.5/5 Melancholy and a bit somber this wonderfully illustrated book would be best suited to older pupils who may connect more easily to the story about how things change over time. This book would offer a good starting point for children to discuss the endurance of the natural world, explore the motivation behind the main character's actions or prompt a research project on abandoned buildings in their own locality.

A solid story that doesn't talk down to the child reader. would be good paired with V.L.Burton's The Little House.

Gorgeous, but I am not quite sure who the audience is for this one--more adult appeal than kid appeal.
