Belle ist süchtig nach Skincare, weil sie schon seit ihrer Kindheit sehr unsicher war und eifersüchtig auf alle die schöner waren. Ihr größter Komplex war ihre wunderschöne Mutter, mit der sie seit eines Unfalls keinen Kontakt mehr hatte und die nun tot aufgefunden wurde. Wie ihre Mutter vor ihrem Tod wird jetzt auch Belle in eine unheimliche Spa-Sekte hineingezogen. Sie bieten ihr eine kostenlose Behandlung an, aber sie nehmen mehr von ihr als sie geben 🫣.

Wie bei Bunny ging es in dieser Geschichte um so viel mehr als im Blurb angeteasert wurde.
- Die toxische aber vielfältige Mutter-Tochter-Beziehung.
- Erwachsenwerden.
- Erwachsenwerden ohne Vater und als Minderheit sogar im eigenen Haus.
- Der Schaden, den Neid alleine anrichten kann.
- Whitewashing und internalisierter Rassismus.
Dazu hat die Autorin noch so einen hypnotisierenden, humorvollen Schreibstil, der einen komplett in die Welt des Geschehens zieht. Auch wenn die Geschichte etwas zu lang gezogen wurde und man zwischendurch den roten Faden verliert, sehe ich das Buch irgendwie als ein Kunstwerk, das reine Interpretationssache ist.
Bonus: Mona Awad hat es wirklich geschafft so viele klassische Märchen (und sogar bisschen ägyptische Mythologie) auf die eine oder andere Art einzubauen: Dornröschen, Schneewittchen, Rapunzel, Cinderella, Der Zauberer von Oz, Ariel, … + sehr überraschend Tom Cruise,

Anteriormente, había leído All's Well y también lo había disfrutado muchísimo. La escritura de Awad me resultó perturbadora, cautivante y confusa en el mejor de los sentidos. Es claro que tiene una gran habilidad para generar esa sensación ominosa de que algo no está bien, aunque no sabemos qué. Las cosas parecen normales, pero hay un corrimiento constante, parecido a lo que sucede en los sueños. Algo en su escritura te desorienta. En Rouge también sentí todo eso, pero más marcado aún. Tengo que admitir que hay momentos que me dieron miedo; una noche me quedé dormida leyendo y cuando me desperté de golpe un par de horas más tarde sentí un verdadero malestar. Awad escribe como si todo el tiempo estuviera a punto de contarte un secreto terrible.
Ahora bien, en mi opinión, en varias instancias el libro se vuelve repetitivo. Entiendo que puede estar relacionado con el "hechizo" que afecta a Mirabelle a partir de cierto punto, pero igual. Pienso que se podrían haber reducido esos momentos reiterativos o redundantes y además que definitivamente la novela podría haber sido un poco más corta, no sé, tal vez unas 30 páginas menos o algo así. Entonces, en relación a lo técnico, pienso que tiene un par de problemas, pero lo que realmente hizo que de todos modos me encantara es su dimensión emotiva. Si bien al principio no lo parece, Rouge es una novela con muchísimo corazón, que tiene como centro una especie de historia de amor, compleja, dañada, pero completamente humana. Hay una cualidad de fragilidad que la vuelve un objeto sensible. Eso es lo que más valoro, más allá de que me fascina la escritura de Awad, el hecho de que pude conectar y sentirme conmovida con el viaje de Mirabelle. También me pareció que la autora trabaja muy bien con los personajes secundarios, Hud, Sylvia, Tad e incluso Noelle, que es más bien un fantasma, una presencia de flashbacks.
En fin, si les interesa algo de todo esto, relaciones madre-hija, el lado oscuro de la belleza y el deseo, espejos mágicos, sectas de millonarios diabólicos, etcétera etcétera, la recomiendo sin duda.
