This book was such a good palette cleanser after that last stupid book. But also it was great. I wished there was a bit more magic tasks haha. I loved having another one of Kingfishers practical heroines, I loved Maria, and the hedgehog of course.  I also wish the resolution had been a bit different maybe? but all in all very solid fun and spooky story

I enjoyed this, but some things caught me along the way. I know the main character is supposed to come off as young, so this may not be a problem for others, but I could not take the story as seriously with it’s tone. As well, the younger thought processes took me out of the story as well.

I have not read from T. Kingfisher before, but I know she is beloved by the book community. I’m unsure if she does this in every book, but another review pointed this out as well so maybe? But throughout the whole story, our main character would point out “how insane” or “how crazy” things happening were, or how crazy she felt, etc. Having to point this out once or twice is fine, but it was very overdone by the end of the book.

It was very entertaining and cute. I hope to read another T. Kingfisher in the future!

Not a favourite but I really like the way t. kingfisher does her protagonists, and whatever animal companions they may have.

I am never disappointed by T. Kingfisher. She is so good at balancing horror elements with cozy whimsy and I appreciate that she has so many standalones. This took me a while longer to get through than I'd have liked but it was more about things being so busy in my life than lack of interest in the book. I'd compare this to Crimson Peak if it were directed by Tim Burton with a dash of Alice in Wonderland at the end. I enjoyed it!
