This was my first book by Minka Kent. It started right away with a murder so I was hooked immediately. Then it is from Alton and her friend Sydney’s POV. It skips from now to the past to show their lives and growing friendship.
I really enjoyed this one. It was a nice easy quick read and very twisty. If you like Freida McFadden you would probably like this one because it gave me those vibes where I trusted no one because you don’t know whether Afton really killed her friends father when they were teenagers and since everyone is still in her life it count be anyone. I definitely say give this one a shot.

Minka Kent, author of "The Stillwater Girls" and "Unmissing" brings us "After Dark." As much as I enjoyed her previous work, this one fell a little short for me. As a child, Afton was accused of committing an unspeakable crime. In addition to the obvious, the problem is she doesn’t remember any of it. She lives with her grandma, takes multiple medications for her mental illness and works at a local hotel. She comes into some money and sets out to free her best friend from her cheating, worthless husband. She also intends to figure out exactly what happened all those years ago that turned her into the town pariah. Portions of this book were unbelievable and I saw the “twist” coming. However, it was a quick read and held my attention. I would rate it 3.5 to 4 stars.

Thank you to the publisher, Thomas and Mercer, and NetGalley for allowing me to read this book for my honest review. The expected publication date is November 14, 2023.

I tore through this book and recommended it to three friends before I’d even finished it. There were lots of surprises and revelations and this was an overall enjoyable ride through some unimaginable scenarios. Nothing is as it seems, in the best of ways.

Thank you to Minka Kent, Thomas & Mercer, and NetGalley for providing me with an ebook copy of After Dark for me to read and review. What a twisty, dark, compelling read. After Dark was filled with so many unique and interesting details that kept the reader guessing and actually led the reader down some misleading avenues all the way through most of the book. I definitely fell for some of those red herrings hook, line, and sinker at least in the beginning. The conclusion of the story definitely was unexpected in ways, but once you got part way through the book, certain parts became a bit predictable. It was still very enjoyable since even the parts that I managed to predict played out in unexpected ways. I definitely recommend After Dark to all thriller readers!

Minka Kent does not disappoint! Twists and turns all throughout the book and kept me up reading well into the late hours of night and early hours of morning, needing to know what happened next.

I would have liked a bit more comeuppance for the perpetrator at the end, but overall was satisfied with the book and will continue to look out for her future releases.

This was a good, twisty thriller! I really enjoyed the pace of the novel as well as the dual perspectives that Minka presents the story in. Selfishly, I also appreciated that Minka did not throw the twist in at the tail end of the novel, but presented it closer to the middle to let things develop and allow the characters to devolve to an (almost) satisfying conclusion. I say almost satisfying because I was hoping for something slightly different, but I do think that it left the doors open for characters to get what was coming to them (so to speak) and to end things on a "good" note.

Overall, this was a really good thriller!

Omg! Such a mind-twister. I absolutely enjoyed this read. There were times I just couldn’t believe what was happening. Or I just didn’t know what was real. The end had a kind of simple poetic justice type of situation, and that’s just not who I am. I would have liked something a bit more dramatic. Maybe Sydney is going to jail for murdering her husband.
