Achab è il simbolo dell'umanità che combatte contro il destino crudele e mutevole.
Come la balena la avvisti per poco e poi scompare fra le onde cosi Achab vuole prendere con mano la vita ma ogni volta le sfugge.
Considerando il tempo in cui è stato scritto il libro presenta una forte componente "Americana" in cui ogni uomo si erge contro il destino cieco e beffardo e tenta in ogni modo di trovare un suo posto.
nella prima parte sono molto interessanti le descrizioni dei leviatani e dei loro comportamenti.
Nella parte centrale del libro si ha un calo del ritmo che non mi ha convinto forse un po troppo lento nello sviluppo.

I'm giving it 2 stars instead of 1 as a concession to the fact that there are some bits of stunning prose, but overall, reading this book has been utterly painful, the kind of pain that makes you groan the moment you look at the page in front of you.
I'm glad I've read it and that I can make an informed opinion now. But boy am I glad it's over.

Wow this book was a struggle. It started well with a nice narrative. It quickly sank into a split novel of not much narrative and research presented as a story. If the author had stuck to telling a story then this would have been a shorter and more enjoyable ride.
I feel like a 64-page graphic novel is absolutely the way to read Moby Dick.
Apparently the sections that I thought were long and boring because they read like an historical textbook and didn’t move the plot forward are my dad’s favorite parts. They are his favorite parts because the book is about “Truth” and the fact that you can’t tell what was true and what was an exaggeration is the whole point… apparently I’m not good at metaphors, I just found not knowing the truth frustrating

I have mixed feelings about this book.
An overly simplified summary of the book--A guy named Ishmael starts off on a whaling voyage from Nantucket, chooses and sets sail on a boat after never meeting the captain. He meets captain Ahab and realizes he is on a suicide mission to kill the White Whale (Moby Dick). The whale had taken Ahab's leg on a previous voyage and he was going mad for revenge. After a few years on the ship catching some "normal whales", on page five-hundred-thirty something of 588 they start pursuing/fighting Moby Dick. The whale basically demolishes them and Ishmael is the lone survivor left to tell the tale.
Firstly, I can see why the book is a classic. I enjoyed some of the philosophical stuff and the metaphors that are used throughout the story. For example, there is a chapter expressly dedicated to interpreting the color white and it ended up being one of my favorite chapters. However, the detail that Melville uses to describe the menial aspects of whaling is just too exhaustive. Like I don't think it was necessary to know every minute step in bringing in a whale. I realize you kind of have to keep in mind the time period in which this was written. Few people were probably acquainted with what whales are so I guess that could be more interesting, but some of the stuff was just plain boring and didn't add to the plot, especially when it was void of any deeper metaphors. (metaphors seemed reached for at times too)
I also realize that some of the ideas that Melville was putting forth in the book were probably progressive for the time period. I enjoyed the period before they set sail where Ishmael befriended the cannibal Queequeg.
I am glad I read the book as I have wanted to read it for awhile, but it was definitely not a page turner.
