One of the most well-written, philosophically and morally challenging books I have ever read.

An American literary masterpiece.  The descriptions of the whale and the whaling boat are brilliantly written, but this book is not about the whale.

How come when Herman Melville hyperfixates, he writes tHe GrEaT aMeRiCaN nOvEl, but when I do it I just end up annoying everyone with unsolicited insights on the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Moby-Dick feels like it was written by two authors. The first is a master weaver of symbolism and literary allusion crafting a profound and haunting 19th-century epic. The second is a particularly bright nine-year-old who just wants to infodump their considerable knowledge of whales onto an audience that is slowly losing interest.

Fortunately, the climax is masterfully brought to life by the former and delivers an emotional blow that makes the journey feel more than worth it. Still, I feel like half of the book's second act could have been cut and nothing of any great value would be missed.

So hard to read...so I listened to it and it was so much better. Remember the time period it was written otherwise you'll wonder what the heck you're reading 😂
