Yesm, it's long. Yes, it's bloody. Yes, it was written in an English us slangmeisters are unfamiliar with.
But Moby Dick is one of the true classics of American literature: a depiction of obsession, a great example of greed overcoming common sense, and an illustration of how one man's magnetic madness leads a whole shipload of characters to the bottom of the ocean.
Not enough? Then see it as the mythological quest of man seeking to kill death, and the inevitable result of that fool's crusade.

Yes, I even loved the chapters about the whales. I'm currently re-reading this...aloud...to my unborn son. That is how much I love this book.
One of the most beautifully written books I've ever read, full of allusions and alliterations. Epic in a very Shakespearean way. Guess a big book about whales is a classic for a reason, right?
I was disappointed that Ishmael kind of disappears as a character and becomes more of an omniscient narrator for a lot of the book. The more personal chapters were my favorites.

i can't believe this is the book i'm completing my reading challenge with but here we are. entire english class centered around this, took me a whole semester to read and i still don't really know how to feel about it. yes it's beautifully written and arguably camp, but it is long, confusing, and i now know too much about whales. it does feel like an accomplishment to say i've read it though!
