What a summer! This took me all summer to read but I feel so happy that I went the distance. The prose is beautiful and the climatic conclusion actually made my heart pound. I might actually re-read this some day.

I wasn't expecting to love this as much as I did. What a ride!

I usually like to read classics, because they usually are classics for a reason. In this case, I would recommend anybody to just get an abridged version. I think if you slim this story down to just the story, it is just a 100 pages long. There are so many sidesteps, so many elaborations, and a bit of the information is a tad outdated.
slow-paced

Finally. The heaviest book I have ever read for sure. Reading this is tough and definitely, in the middle, becomes a non-fiction book about whales and whaling itself. So much information. The way in which he relates everything back to myth and legends and history is remarkable - almost Sebald like. For that, Melville is a genius. It is an utterly monolithic novel.

And, the ending is one of the greatest I've ever read.

Again, with the word I love. But this is a masterpiece. Glad to have finally read it.
