I thought I knew what I should expect from Moby Dick--Ishmael narrating Captain Ahab's crazed hunt for the white whale that took his leg. What I wasn't expecting were the chapters interspersed into the plot chapters, giving encyclopedic type information about whales. While unexpected, I did enjoy it. I was also surprised to find something of a conservation message in the story, comparing overhunting of whales to buffalo on the American Plains, even though Ishmael wasn't concerned that this night actually become an issue. Overall I enjoyed the story. The language is captivating, and I thought the audiobook was very well done. I definitely find it easier to get through long novels like this, especially when there is some antiquated language as an audiobook.

I hated this book. I don't think I can bring myself to try it again!

Why is this book a classic? The story itself was enjoyable, but the story comprised not even half of the book. Unless you want to bore yourself to death, I would not recommend reading this book. There were so many tangents and asides that I completely lost a grasp on what was happening. I seriously felt like I completely wasted my time.

I'm glad I took my time with this, and came back to it after a couple of failed attempts. It's perhaps one of the best books I've read. I will definitely read it again.
