disclaimer: I don’t really give starred reviews because I don’t like leaving them. I enjoy most books for what they are, & I extract lessons from them all. Everyone’s reading experiences are subjective, so I hope my reviews provide enough information to let you know if a book is for you or not. Okay, I loved the general premise of this - zombies becoming feral at a massive music festival. WILD. I love it. However, I felt the execution was a bit sloppy. I loved the diversity of this friends group (Zoey, Celeste, Valeria, and Jasmine). However, some of the flashback portions were too long and dragged (for me). I appreciate the context, but I also didn't need that much. Does that make sense?!

This book was entertaining enough, but it mostly felt like a desert music festival fever dream that would probably work better as a movie. I'd watch it if it was optioned and adapted for a movie on Netflix or in theaters!

cw: cannibalism, murder, drug use, gore, pandemic, body horror, injury detail

This was a fun ride! It’s a perfect balance of horrifying and endearing. The main group is a group of girls trauma bonded by the event that changed the world known as The Hollowing. I found all of the girls to be relatable and intriguing to get to know; even when it mainly follows a first person one narrator format, we get pov switches in the form of flashbacks in 3rd person to dive into other characters. There’s romance and a hint of a love triangle, but I would say that it is very much a subplot to the overall plot. All of the four main characters are sapphic, which to me is something I always appreciate when writers realistically write queer people sticking together.
There are some questions left unanswered imo, and it’s kind of an open ending, but it doesn’t deter from the overall satisfaction of the book for me. There are some intense horror elements like body horror and gore, but it wasn’t overdone or overzealous. I really enjoyed reading the evolution of the main couple, even if it wasn’t a major focus and it was predictable I think that it complimented the story and themes well.

What a fun, witty YA horror! I really really enjoyed this. Not an incredibly unique premise, however, the plot was fun and I loved the characters a lot. I would recommend a book like this for folks looking to explore horror genres but not wanting to start with something too intense.

This book is such a great summer read! Loved the campy B-movie vibes and the characters were totally adorable. TDD is a book that definitely knows what it’s about. I would not recommend if you dislike gore, but hopefully you gleaned that from the cover lol. Nightmarish scenario but the ending was so sweet and hopeful.
