The concept for this book is great, a world where ghouls can live a “normal” life and society has made accommodations. The main character and her friends go to a music festival in the desert where ghouls are mysteriously becoming feral. It’s a little genre-bending because it’s creature horror, with a mystery aspect, and a lot of gore. The writing seems immature in some areas, and some words were repeated too often for me. The descriptions of characters came off abrasive instead of thought out. It’s a cute coming-of-age sapphic story, but it could have been better. It was an easy read and fast to get through. I do think this would be a great tv show because we need more sapphic horror in the world.

This was a fun ride! It’s a perfect balance of horrifying and endearing. The main group is a group of girls trauma bonded by the event that changed the world known as The Hollowing. I found all of the girls to be relatable and intriguing to get to know; even when it mainly follows a first person one narrator format, we get pov switches in the form of flashbacks in 3rd person to dive into other characters. There’s romance and a hint of a love triangle, but I would say that it is very much a subplot to the overall plot. All of the four main characters are sapphic, which to me is something I always appreciate when writers realistically write queer people sticking together.
There are some questions left unanswered imo, and it’s kind of an open ending, but it doesn’t deter from the overall satisfaction of the book for me. There are some intense horror elements like body horror and gore, but it wasn’t overdone or overzealous. I really enjoyed reading the evolution of the main couple, even if it wasn’t a major focus and it was predictable I think that it complimented the story and themes well.

What a fun, witty YA horror! I really really enjoyed this. Not an incredibly unique premise, however, the plot was fun and I loved the characters a lot. I would recommend a book like this for folks looking to explore horror genres but not wanting to start with something too intense.

The concept is extremely cool, and I would try out other books by this author! This was definitely a great YA book. There were places where I wanted to see more and places that felt bare to me, but I think that’s more a consequence of my having grown up beyond the age of the book’s target demographic.

I found myself wishing this book was a little longer and a little more slowly paced so I could explore the world more (and maybe get a  better feel for any characters so they would feel more three-dimensional and real). The queer rep was pretty cool, and I appreciated the author’s use of gender-inclusive language throughout.
