Not as good as Dostoyevsky's later masterpieces (Crime and Punishment, The Brothers Karamazov), but still better than most books you'll ever read. Dostoyevsky has a special ability to make you empathize with his heroes like you're experiencing their feelings yourself. But if you've read his later books, you can tell his writing hasn't yet reached its full potential in 'Humiliated and Isulted'.
**SPOILER**
I also found the book to be a bit too gloomy. Dostoyevsky's heroes always suffer greatly, but usually the reader is left with a glimer of hope (which he can choose to take or leave). Here the one-dimensionally evil prince wins, the humiliated accept their defeat and those who love selflessly end up dead or alone (or as it seems in the narrator's case, both).
