Just a wonderful and lovely book. On one level it stands with any childhood memoir. Innocent and insightful, warm and honest. And then it helped me understand central Europe the better, gives a new dimension on a part of the world I know some. Deserves to be more widely known.

Vast prachtig als je van vissen houdt, maar dit werd me op een gegeven moment te veel.

I loved this book. Very rarely do I choose memoirs/autobiographies, but this one stuck out and fascinated me from just the title alone. Did not disappoint. Full of humor even when recounting difficult events (a significant chunk of the book takes place during the Nazi occupation), it’s also thoughtful and sensitive. Indeed, literal fish and fishing are a major theme of the book, but it is also somehow metaphorical for the author’s life and the people who pass through it. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys thought provoking, character driven tales.
