This may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it is *absolutely* my kind of thing. Here's a quick litmus test:
1. Will you be interested in knowing how much cash a character has on them, what they spend buying household staples, and then the costs of various transport options for getting home? Congrats! You'll like this as much as I do.
2. Do you like the scenes in Overlord where Ainz is faking it until he makes it but think it would be better if all of the floor guardians were similarly bluffing and providing PoVs? Then you're going to enjoy the Tarot Club.
3. Do you like a progressive power system where you are slowly uncovering the higher levels and what they do, and where your success depends on embodying the spirit of the power you're acquiring? Get your notebook ready, because there's going to be a lot of that.

It may not be the tightest writing but it's an extremely effective mashup of Victorian crime drama, Lovecraftian cult horror, and a videogame-style progression power system. The book moves along at a slow pace, in no small part because the author appears to be paid by the word, but in my experience that just gives the dynamics and themes a chance to bake in that very few other books provide. Character relationships progress organically, repetition slowly makes the world feel intuitive, and progress feels clearly earned.

an amazingly creative novel. this world building is on a whole other level. at this point, you can say he's an indie author that rivals trad authors. There is so much as far as culture, religion, and the magic system. when reading fantasy, I look for the features mentioned and how well they are executed. with this novel, you can tell we are only scratching the surface. it's so many layers, including the politics in both the government and churches, the depth of the 22 pathways, and not to mention Klein, Tarot Club, and the gray fog! Seriously, if you like fantasy or specifically epic fantasy, this is the series for you!
