Great mystery and it's interesting to see the development of Llewelyn's character. But the farther on in the series I get, the less I like Barker. His demeanor is really starting to annoy me. Another thing is the frequency of swear words has increased dramatically in the last few books and this one I think has had the most so far. It's really frustrating because it's so unnecessary and the earlier volumes prove that the author can write well without relying on them.

Audiobook Review. Narrator: Antony Ferguson

I really enjoyed this one, except for how whiny Llewelyn can be. I love the investigation he and Barker do, but I can do without the Llewelyn romance subplot. It just ends up being irritating and distracting from the case work.

Set in 1890 London and narrated by twenty-six year old Thomas Llewelyn; after Cyrus Barker is injured in an explosion, Thomas sets out to find out who would want to kill his employer.
Complicating the case, is the unexpected arrival of Caleb Barker, Cyrus’s brother from America.

I’m probably not the best one to have an opinion on this book, since I got it as a freebie from a friend and didn’t realize it was part of a series till I cracked it open. It was fine—not world-class literature or anything, but it was an enjoyable and easy read.

DNF. Not very good, not enough suspense, the characters are parodies, behaving ridiculously. Seems like a YA novel, trying to be funny but isn't much.

*CHOMP.* MORE! *looks around* wait...wait, what do you mean this is all there is? 8 books, 1 novella, and an ARC of Blood is Blood? But...but...but...there has to be more! I need at least five more books, Will Thomas, and I needed them YESTERDAY. Aaaackgh. This is what I get for reading all of the books, one after the other, nonstop. How long until book 11? Will we be getting another novella soon? And when are we going to meet Thomas's family?! 10 books and we've never met his parents or any of his nine siblings! I want a whole book dedicated to Thomas reconciling with his family and he and Barker and Mac running all around Wales. I NEED IT.

You can see my review of all 10 books here on my dumb book blog.

Write faster, Will Thomas.

The offices of Cyrus Barker are bombed and Barker is seriously injured. Thomas Llewelyn desperately wants to solve the case before he and Rebecca Cowan are married. Scotland Yard is willing to assist the investigation because they know it reflects badly on them when people in London are bombed. Cyrus is either in hospital or convalescing, so the whole investigation falls on Thomas' shoulders. He pulls together a list of suspects and begins to follow the trail. Interestingly enough, Cyrus' brother, Caleb, shows up, straight from the Wild West of the US; he is a Pinkerton agent and is in England for a case. Cyrus is willing to help Thomas, but only up to a point; he has his own kettle of fish to fry. As the list of suspects narrows, Thomas and Rebecca face some powerful enemies. Another interesting entry in this series, which is marked by excellent historical detail and good character development.
