Positives. This book has an amazing concept: Victorian lady pirates with flying houses and dastardly banter?? Sign me up! The humour was fantastic and the characters were quirky in their own unique way.

Negatives. In spite of the great premise, I was left disappointed. The book had a flying start but by the end it had committed the greatest crime of all: it was boring. The story slowed down greatly near the middle of the book and never recovered. It's not a good sign when you're left wondering what could happen to draw out the story for another hundred pages. I was also disappointed in Cecilia's character development: she was a great main character with lots of agency but had accomplished little by the end. Instead of keeping an adventurous touch, this novel devolved into a cliché romance story and that was not a great choice in my opinion.

Witty, funny, cozy, this was such a delight to read! I love the concept of a society of refined and polished ladies who are also pirates! There was not a single chapter in this that I didn't laugh out loud, I thoroughly enjoyed every page I read.
India Holton has a very distinct writing style and I was immediately drawn in by the historical world and magic she brought. I loved how badass all the characters are, and how they ran the show and treated men with disdain or exasperation.
I am so glad this is a series, I can't wait to read the next book.
If you are looking for a cozy and funny book filled with adventures, pirates, and romance, then this is the perfect book for you. (Or if you just want to read a good book, I HIGHLY recommend!)

Loved this book. It’s like Bridgerton but with magic and pirates and the overthrowing of the patriarchy. Only has one smut scene but lots of tension building up.

This book was read as part of the 2023 book club for march. This was the second time I read this book and the first time I feel like I enjoyed it more, I gave it 5 stars. I raced through the first read and laughed out loud, cheered and finished the book with a happy sigh. This read, I found a lot more things problematic and just outright boring. Ned can be overly pushy and Ceclia really just existed. Both the main characters were pretty one dimensional and I couldn’t tell you a single thing either of them did or even anything deeper than basic likes and dislikes. They were great characters to project yourself on to, but as far as being human? Not so much. Things I loved about the book include the plethora of witty quotes, Jane Austen references, fighting and having a conversation at the same time, the “only one bed” trope, older women being absolute legends, and Pleasance’s character. She was such a fun aspect of the book and it would have been so much better with more of her.
The plot takes a major pace hit after they enter Morvath’s castle. The book drags for the next 100 or so pages. Cecila choosing to run away with Ned was expected as it is a romance novel, however it felt so conflicting compared to the goal she had literally the entire book. With the main undertones in this book being very feminist, I was expecting something else.

The definition of a madcap adventure romance! This wasn’t a perfect book — it dragged on too long, the beginning was nearly nonsensical because of the lack of world building — but it certainly dared to be different and I appreciate the satirical whimsy. Altogether an enjoyable adventure, if not my favorite.
