Relies on shock value. The fast pace and short read does not make up for the story.

I do not mind extreme horror or gore, but the topic of rape needs to be handled respectfully.

The main female character has her body and trauma used for the sake of the protagonist, the ending is particularly disgusting. Sexual violence being used in service of someone's goals is vile.

This was just… gross? And not in a particularly creepy way, honestly. I just didn’t enjoy this book as much as I’ve enjoyed other extreme horror, I guess? It’s well-written, and I’m sure it’s for somebody, but it’s just not for me.

Disturbingly dark. Not at all what I expected — but heinous nonetheless. This nontraditional tale of horror will definitely fuck up your brain.

Perhaps I've read too many manhwas and mangas with far more shock value than this, but somehow it made me feel increasingly dirty than creeped out. Major content warnings are provided by the author at the outset. Will be tagging them here as well.

CW / TW that isnt in Storygraph list : Descriptive scene of a minor engaging in sexual behavior

I honestly don't know how to rate this. I loved the characters and found myself connecting to them somehow, finding the whole
rebirthing
thing to be strangely therapeutic in a sense. However, the complete lack of respect Angel shows at the end for Shyla made me frown, despite knowing it was not out of character. As well, the n word having made an appearance twice was also very offputting. It was so out of place, I can't imagine why Ralston chose to add it in the first place. It's a shame, as it was a very lovely story otherwise.
