Omg with the cliffhangers. Just non-stop action!

Sure it's cool. But there is way too much combat. And too many indistinguishable characters and groups fighting each other for no good reasons. Hard to follow, hard to care. Art seems nice but really that's not enough. More text would be better, more character development and motivations.

4.0 Stars. Akira was originally published in the US in 38 chapters, later collected into 6 volumes. Vol. 3 is chapters 12-16. This volume focuses on the hunt for Akira.

The Good:
- The coup d'état: I'm still unclear on what the Colonel's end game is at this point. Does he have the people's best interest in mind? Is there a more selfish reason for his actions? Regardless the coup d'état upped the ante in this volume. It adds confusion, chaos, and uncertainty into what is already a powder keg of a situation.

- The destruction of Neo-Tokyo: I did not anticipate that Akira would cause destruction so quickly or on such a massive scale. I'm curious what the implications of that will be. At this time, the rest of the world doesn't know of Akira's existence. Now that Tetsuo is with him it doesn't seem possible to keep him a secret. Who knows what those two ticking time bombs are going to get up to.

The Bad:
- The Espers powers and abilities remain somewhat vague: The remaining Espers were able to transport a large group of people prior to the explosions. There hasn't been a meaningful explanation of what each Esper is capable of so right now it seems like each one can do whatever the plot needs them to be able to do.

Lady Miyako's child followers: Seeing Lady Miyako's trained child followers murdered while trying to recover Akira was a plot point I struggled with. I'm not sure what their being children added to the story other than making Lady Miyako seem like a psychopath for using children in this way.

This volume is high action from the get-go; I almost found myself fatigued by all the action- the stakes keep getting raised, tensions running high, I had no idea how things were going to end! What saved it was the ending pages- Otomo again showing his mastery with the pen, with the strength of silence in the double page spreads, and the cliffhanger is amazing.

I was going to give this one a 3 as it drug a bit for me and just felt like more of the same throughout, which was a premise of hide and seek / tag. The ending really picked up though and the mystery of Akira is starting to clear up bit by bit.

Also it ends with a bang!
Plus the arrival of a character I had completely forgotten about throughout the entire volume
. I’d also like to mention the art is phenomenal. Some of the splash pages are so well done!

Overall very solid and excited to continue the series.

I was a bit confused as to who was fighting who and the politics of it all, but I enjoyed the story a lot more when I just assumed that no one should trust anyone else. The action scenes really flew by! I really enjoyed the new characters Sakaki, Mozu, and Miki, and I want to know more about their stories. The ending of this volume was also really good.
