Definitely more like 3.5 stars but rounding up because Girma does not play around when it comes to enemies to lovers and I’m obsessed with that. I’ll be honest the plot/scene/magic system is kind of messy. Like the classes and schoolwork which is not an insignificant part of this book does not always make a whole lot of sense and I didn’t find it super interesting.

But that Susenyos and Kidan dynamic? Literally finally a FMC isn’t falling all over herself even though she “hates” someone??? The way these two go for the absolute jugular at every opportunity is CRAZY. They are both unhinged. But honestly ok go off. When Kidan took the axe to the door I knew this was finally a FMC with a backbone.

However - I did kind of feel like this world is essentially a world in which murdering is basically fine, if not encouraged, for literally every single person. Which sometimes made it hard to root for anyone because I think everyone just is kinda evil? Also how the hell is this YA?!

I struggled with the first half of this book, I did not enjoy it, I found the FMC incredibly frustrating. However, I felt that the story line and the world had a lot of potential so I continued to read and I was happily surprised to find that I much preferred the tone of the second half of the book with the last quarter really amping up the intensity.
