Kidan is wanted for murder, and the only family she has left is her lost sister. She and her sister grew up far from the arcane society, and now it calls for her. The vampire Kidan suspects kidnapped her sister will inherit her family's house at Uxlay University if she does not attend and pass a class. To save her family's house and hopefully find her sister, she is forced to live in the same house as Susenyos, her family's bound vampire. While attending the University, Susenyos does everything in his power to get Kidan to fail and leave the University for good. Murders, house rules, and vampires, what more could you ask for?
Wow.....! What a good reimagined vampire book! I haven't read a vampire/ dark academia book quite like this one. The "romance", the unique magic/vampire system, the dark Victorian university setting.
The characters in this book are unique, well-rounded, deep characters. The main character has a huge character growth throughout the book. At first, she can be a bit of a sociopath; she lacks some guilt and empathy. Her main goal in this book is to find her sister, but it gets put on the back burner multiple times throughout the book due to her newfound family. Susenyos is the dark, brooding vampire who despises Kidan. He has his own reasons for wanting to keep the house.
Relationship-wise... when I say enemies to somewhat lovers, I really mean enemies. They are at each other's throats literally for most of this book. They have a very wishy-washy relationship where some days they tolerate and care for each other, and the next, they are back to wanting to kill each other. Usually, I don't like the back-and-forth relationships, but it honestly really works for these two. I am rooting for these two and don't expect these two to get together because this seems like a very slow burn.
Plot-wise wise I was gripped. Learning about this world and the rules and houses/families was riveting. I read this book in a few days because I did not want to put this book down. Each chapter kind of left off on an exciting incident. The chapters are also nice a short for you to think "ok, just one more" because they are just the right page count. The Ethiopian culture/myths being used/incorporated into this book were really cool. That was a unique touch and brought something new to vampire books.
Reading this, I could not believe it was a YA book, not because of the gore (which it can get a bit gory in some chapters) but because it read like an adult fantasy novel. For this being the author's debut novel, I can't wait to see what other books she puts out. That being said, I am looking forward to the second book in this series that comes out in November.
If you need a good fall read, READ THIS BOOK!!!
