This book was really heartwrenching. I need to put down this book several times because I can't endure the pain that being told in the book. Not too much descriptive text, so I think you'll like it even if you're not into history books.

I rated this book 5 stars because it presented the info in a way that was understandable. The author includes ample evidence for each claim and adequately paints a picture of China under Japanese rule. It’s important history and the author documents it well.

I read the 2011 edition, and honestly could have done without most of Chang's husband's epilogue. Not a fan of the pages of him telling an audience of people not intimately involved in Chang's life, her actions and the in-depth questioning of her mental illness. It is critically important to highlight mental health, but he should have stopped at the questioning and allowed the communal grief of her death.
