Another fun ride from Rick Riordan! I'm really liking the new main characters, and am looking forward to seeing how things go.

Once again this book/series is shaping up to be quest-oriented, which works well in keeping with the way that Greek mythology unfolds. It keeps things moving, and everything leads to something else that must happen to continue the chain, or the quest would all fall apart.

It's also nice to get the opportunity to really get the chance to know more about other demigod children that aren't from the Big Three, such as the children of Aphrodite and Hephaestus. Let's just say that French and fire are very good things :)

This book is THE moment.

I have not reread this book since I initially read it three years ago, and in all honesty, I forgot how good it was. I knew that I loved it. I knew that it was fantastic. I knew that it was book one in my favourite series of all time. What I didn’t know was how utterly phenomenal this reading experience was going to be.

Rereading any Rick Riordan book makes you notice things that you didn’t the first time. Rereading this book made me realise how much attention to detail and thought that Rick puts into his craft, which is such a special thing.

The Lost Hero is packed with foreshadowing and hints of what is coming and it is glorious.

It is seriously such an epic set-up for this series and really gives you such a strong hint of what is coming. It establishes where we’re going to be going, whilst also making such a fun and engaging story to get lost in.

The plot of this book was utterly stunning. Sometimes books in series really can’t stand on their own, but this one can - it holds up and is seriously amazing, and one of the strongest Rick Riordan books that I have ever read.

However, I think that what really makes this book is the friendship dynamics. The dynamic between Jason, Piper and Leo was supreme, and there are very few friendship groups that I have read on this level. Rick really gives a clear sense of relationships and connections between characters which is just an utter joy to read and just makes this story feel so real.

The characters are also so distinct and diverse in both personality and experience, which makes for such a realisable reading experience.

Also, why does nobody talk about how SAVAGE Jason is??? Like we all talk about Persassy, but Jason’s sass level is also off the charts!

Such a great start to the series!

Do not read this review if you don't want to be spoiled.

Okay. Let's start from the beginning. We start out story with Jason, who has amnesia, and doesn't remember anything about his life whatsoever, being thrown in a school bus holding hands with his presumed girlfriend, who is cute. I know. Piper is cute. You don't have to remind me every three pages.

So Jason Grace is the replacement for Percy Jackson in this saga, basically, and he was just literally unable to reach the soles of his feet in personality terms. He's conflicted, he's constantly confused, kind of repetitive and absolutely dull as a narrator. I couldn't wait until we changed perspective or at least learned a little bit more about his past because that part was at least, very interesting. And he also turns out to be Thalia's brother, which, surprise, Thalia is my least favorite character in the PJO books, BUT!! The way she behaved towards Jason made me like her a lot more than I thought I could. - Though I STILL do not like Jason -

Piper is our new Annabeth, I guess. Though she wishes she could be Annabeth, clearly. I mean, okay, I guess she's pretty. Please stop repeating it. You're making me dislike her. Secondly I do appreciate the fact that we get to understand and know so much more about the other cabins in the camp, but... dude. She's not that useful in the long run. Her charmspeak wasn't working with at least 70% of the enemies they faced, and she didn't even know how to fight. How is she Annabeth? Like, how? She's just whining about Jason the entire time and then she just... moans about her dad, then she just lies to her friends and then when she learns the lesson... THEN she becomes useful while saving her dad. I did start to like her towards the end of the book, but her forced relationship with Jason is so insta-love is making me cringe.

Then there's Leo, who is the only character in this book I liked wholeheartedly and honestly since he first showed up. Leo has everything. He's got an interesting and dark backstory, wit, amazing powers and he's just altogether useful for everything. He fixes Festus, the adorable Happy the dragon, then he mourns him when he falls out of the sky. He's adorable when it comes to girls, he's very mature for his age and he constantly save everyone's asses during the book. He's the only reason I kept reading in a steady pace, because if it weren't for him, I would've taken a month to read this book, or God knows how long.

I'm sure there are good things about the book, because I did enjoy it. But the characters, that are basically the foundations for this entire story, are too bland for my taste. Let's hope next book gets better in that aspect.

This book was action packed and filled with likable characters, as well as an intriguing story and Greek and Roman mythology. It was captivating and it captivated me all the way to the end of the book within a few days. Maybe it was written for a younger audience, but to me that doesn't matter. I like reading a book for a good story, and that's what I got!
