I was a little wary of reading a sequel-series to Percy Jackson, not sure where Riordan could take the Camp Half Blood world which was new. But he rises to the challenge and meets it. Percy is missing in this first book and we get to know three new, interesting, complex characters who get new adventures. I really didn't ever feel like the author was recycling his ideas. The structure is different, the narration is third person and moves between characters carefully. Well worth reading, but after the Percy Jackson books or it won't make sense.

I actually don't know why people don't rock with this book, I really liked it. Maybe the original Percy Jackson series was leagues ahead of this and I don't remember them at all so I can't compare it with that, but maybe that's a good thing, maybe that allowed me to enjoy this more. It reminded me why franchises are so likable. There's always that sense of familiarity, that frequent feeling of "oh yeah, I remember these guys, good times", even though I can't recall a single thing that happened to Percy after Lightning Thief.

I really like the new trio of Jason, Piper, and Leo. They're all charming in their own way; Leo is highkey the main hero of the whole story, Jason got that mysterious leader aura to him, and Piper is a child of Aphrodite, you know she's tough just based off that. Loved seeing Annabeth and Thalia again too. The new characters were pretty fire too. Khione, Hera (idk if she's new tbh), Festus, maybe not Gleeson though. Really excited to see where the rest of HoO goes though. I feel like this book only gave me a small taste of what could be and I'm slobbering for more. Percy in the next book, perchance?

although this book does have a special place in my heart (introducing me to pjo) it just wasn't as good as i remembered, most likely because i remember all the plot twists.
