The start of a second, connected series! I love how this series includes our past main characters, but they're beloved NPCs here. The book switches narrators every chapter, which is not my favorite style, but my kids and I all enjoyed the book!

Really liked this one...I just wish I'd waited to read it until closer to time for the second book in the series to come out.
I wasn't sure how much I'd like the switching of perspective between the three lead characters, but it actually worked for me. I also like how the author is handling the whole Greek/Roman mythology thing.
It was great getting to revisit favorite characters from the Percy Jackson series and well as meet new characters, and all three lead characters are quite likable...with Leo being a personal favorite.

I DID >>NOT<< READ >>5 BOOKS<< OF BUILD UP JUST SO U COULD THROW IT ALL THE WAY NO NO ABSOLUTELY NOT NO THERES NO WAY
IM LOOSING MY MIND IM GONNA START CRYING CAUSE OF HOW MAD I AM RN
HOW COULD U DO THIS HONESTLY NOOOO NOOOO NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO NO NO NO NO NO NO
YOU GOTTA BE FUCKING WITH ME NO UNACCEPTABLE
EDIT: started reading the 2nd book of this series and its exactly what i was hoping it wouldn’t be, slight spoiler ahead, i have such disgust for memory loss tropes i cant even put it into words, im incredibly disappointed because it had become my favorite series but this just ruined it completely for me
i genuinely thought that “The Son of Neptune” would be different but its the exact same thing that this book was
a shame
changing my rating to 3 stars
2ºEDIT: YALLL AHHAHAHAH JUST REREAD THIS AND THIS WAS SO GOOD BITCH I WAS FUCKING TRIPPING BACK THEN
like genuinely Rick knows how to write a fucking ending, THAT WAS SO AMAZING i had forgotten about it.
I should address the whole crash out because of the amnesia trope HAHAAH i still don't like it but by reading a second time i can totally see why it was so necessary, i also noticed that i missed A LOT of stuff the first time and honestly it's such a pleasurable experience to find certain "clues" about these characters futures lol
gonna change my star rating again i guess 😭

Rereading this as an adult, I have so much more appreciation for this first book in The Heroes of Olympus Series.
The original Percy Jackson series is an iconic, mythic coming-of-age story, but The Lost Hero unveils an intense, heroic tale in which Percy’s individual journey was only the preface. He will have to join with six other demigods for the new Great Prophecy, and this book introduces us to the first three: Piper, daughter of Aphrodite, Leo, son of Hephaestus, and Jason, son of Zeus(?) - three 16 year-olds belatedly brought to Camp Half-Blood for reasons that are revealed later in the story.
The Lost Hero shows us just how complicated the new battle will be, and the story is so masterfully crafted that I can’t believe this is considered middle-grade. This reads like the type of young adult fantasy that I enjoy: unique, complex characters, high-stakes missions, and precious bonds formed in the process.
When this was first released, I recall people not loving the lack of Percy, and therefore not loving the new characters. Here are my arguments:
- Percy and the other loved characters are mentioned/featured quite a bit, and it’s not just through cute little Easter eggs. While our old favorites aren’t the main characters of this book, they are still integral to the story, and the growing bonds between them and our new MCs are important to explore.
- You need to trust the process. In addition to the appearance of our new MCs, the DISappearance of Percy Jackson is one of the most crucial plot devices here. Camp Half-Blood will figure out where he is at the end, and you just need to pick up the next book if you want to get your next dose of Percy Jackson, a hero yet again getting his life messed up by the gods.
TLDR; The Lost Hero is a PHENOMENAL beginning to the second series in the Percy Jackson universe. If you loved following his journey leading up to the Battle of Manhattan, you simply MUST pick up this book to see what happens next.
