(This is a "remembered" review. I read the book several years ago.)

I read Ms. Burnes' Fear Familiar series out of order, beginning first with Book #1 and then jumping to this one, Book #8.

While I enjoyed the author's writing style, alone with her legendary leading feline, Familiar, I wasn't as struck by this novel as the original. In her earlier work, Burnes focused more on the mystery and the character development. In Familiar Hearts the romantic angle was more prevailant - in both the human and feline characters.

The writing felt more forced than previously and, while the lead cat was still clever, it felt he was recycling the same lines in places.

I did, overall, like the tale however. And I continued to seek out other books in the series.

(My rating system: 1 = Disliked, 2 = Fine but not for me, 3 = Enjoyed, 4 = Really liked, 5 = I would seek to re-read this book.)
