Lots and LOTS of practical info. A great read if you are considering chickens. The author does a good job of speaking to rural, urban, and in between situations.

I've read a LOT of books about chickens. (Never in my youth did I ever think I would utter such a sentence.) It's all part of my latest fantasy about owning a farm and living off the land. And chickens are almost an essential part of farm life. In my poultry travels, I have come across competent books, fantastic books, mediocre books, and so forth. While I will probably go to my grave maintaining that Gail Damerow's "Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens" is the ultimate chicken reference book, I believe that Ashley English's book comes second on the list.

English has given us a gorgeously photographed book that celebrates chickens. While it provides solid, basic information, it is probably best used as an introduction to someone just beginning their chicken journey (another phrase I never thought I'd say.) The best information that English conveys to her audience is that chickens are fun. Before reading this book I viewed the raising of chickens as a means to an end: getting fresh, healthy food cheaply. Ashley English has managed to convince me that while chickens will inevitably create work and chores, they will also provide entertainment and enjoyment.

This book is amazing. It was clearly crafted with an eye towards clean, uncluttered, beautiful design. The photographs are crisp and beautiful and the content is informative without overloading a beginner. A great beginner text. Urban homesteading - here we come! I am thinking of getting 4 sussex chicks!

Urban egg farmers will get lots from this. I thought it was cute but maybe not so practical for us!
