Readers of KSR's other books will be familiar with how he writes. Part fictional narrative, part technical manual, part philosophical treatise. Characters are not his strongest suit, but the events and ideas described are engaging in their own right.

Although this book is, in places, completely emotionally devastating, it is also the only thing in a long time that has made me feel even slightly hopeful about climate change or global justice. Robinson wrestles fully with the fact that no single solution is possible, that all solutions must be tried simultaneously, and that no matter what we do at this point there will be devastating consequences for some. But he also provides a model for a possible path forward.
